This striking image for Skull Candy was a great collaboration for our retouching and 3D department. It began with a beautifully captured background by photographer Ian Butterworth. The talent was shot in situ, and then the 3D skull was set to match the lighting and position. To create the broken head and shards our 3D team started with a male bust which was shattered with the visual effects software RayFire. At that point the pieces were brought into digital sculpting package ZBrush, and the rough edges were further refined. 3Ds Max was used to model the sweets with varying gloss, opacity and individual bump maps to create realistic surfaces. For the final step, the hair for the shards was created in Hair Farm and attached to the pieces, then scattered amoung the spill of candy across the foreground. All of the elements were merged into a single scene and rendered utilising an HDR and a directional light for a better match with the photography. Our retouchers brought it all together to create an impressive image that was one of our favourites for the year.
